Assignment- You will care for Mr. Sanchez from the time he returns from hissurgery to the time he is discharged from the hospital.
- Assess the patient. (Check things like pain level and vital signs.What kind of medication is running in his patient controlled analgesia(PCA) pump, and what are the settings? Is the PCA pump running accordingto MD orders? Query the patient with appropriate questions selected offthe menu.)
- Check the physician's orders for the medication(s) that can be usedto manage pain, or that can be used to manage side effects of the painmedications.
- Intervene as appropriate. Administer medications for pain or to treatside effects consistent with physician's orders. Change the PCA pumpsettings if necessary. Provide teaching as appropriate. (Be careful, notall of the teaching choices are correct!)
- If you'd like some guidance in what to do, consult with yoursupervising nurse.
- Notes should be recorded for your assessments and interventions.
- Advance the clock and re-assess your patient. Use small advances inthe clock (15 minutes) at first until you feel the patient is stable,then advance by greater increments (4+ hours) to enable you to get tothe end of the 5 day simulation.
- At the end of the simulation, you will receive a patientsatisfaction score. Your score is based on your ability to keep thepatient's pain under control, manage side effects, and teach theappropriate things.
- Export the report of your session and print that browserwindow using the print command from your browser's File menu.
